Villiers gains consolation prize as Hammond’s deputy

Theresa Villiers has been appointed minister of state at the Department for Transport the day after being overlooked for the transport secretary role in favour of Philip Hammond.

Villiers, the MP for Chipping Barnet, had been shadow transport secretary for three years, but is now effectively Hammond’s deputy. Her failure to land the top job at the DfT had been widely predicted by lobbyists and Westminster observers, who saw her as having done a decent but unspectacular job in opposition...
