Enforcement Summit to debate latest trends in traffic and parking management

27 February 2014

The government’s proposal to ban the use of CCTV cameras to enforce parking offences will be a key area of debate at the 8th annual Enforcement Summit 2014, which takes place in London on 9 April.

The Parking Review conference and exhibition will also, among other things, scrutinise the real pros and cons of parking enforcement in urban areas, especially how to regulate parking in safety-sensitive areas such as roads around schools, as well as box junctions and along bus lanes.

Managing the often conflicting needs of different road users, residents and businesses will also be covered by presentations on loading and unloading, as well as the confusing approach to pavement parking across the UK. Ways of dealing with often hostile reaction to front line parking patrols face will be addressed.

The day will comprise presentations by national and local authorities, parking operators, drivers’ organisations, safety campaigners and technology providers.

The Enforcement Debate

Following the success of the ‘Parking Futures’ debate at last year’s Parking  World event, the summit will also feature a 'Question Time' session in which a range of experts will discuss topical and perennial issues relating to parking and traffic management policy and practice. Delegates will be encouraged to submit questions and topics before the event as well as engage in the discussion from the floor.

Potential themes include:

  • The proposed ban on CCTV parking enforcement
  • Where, and by whom, should ‘discretion’ be exercised in the enforcement process - CEOs on street, processing staff in the back office, local authority officers or contractors?
  • Do financial penalties really alter driver behaviour?
