This event is to mark the UK launch of 'Vision Zero' which is a multi-national road traffic safety project which aims to achieve a system with no fatalities or serious injuries in road traffic or on our streets.
Adopted in Sweden in 1997 it is now policy in many US cities such as New York and Boston.
Zero KSI has been adopted as the target in Northern Ireland, Edinburgh and Brighton whilst Bristol has a safe systems approach.
Since 2009, KSI casualties in the UK have fallen fastest in Northern Ireland, Scotland and London – which, unlike England (other than TfL in London), have road safety targets, detailed strategies and dedicated resources.
What are the best road safety vision – (zero versus rate based, % decline), who's responsible and what strategies work? How can roads become safe especially for the vulnerable – pedestrians and cyclists meaning that smarter travel policies become more successful at traffic reduction, active travel, improving air quality and more?
