Across the UK, there is a realisation that ambition needs to be raised in order to deliver on active travel commitments. This event will highlight the successful delivery of high quality and safe active travel infrastructure across the UK, and showcase the local authorities, consultants, charities, campaign groups, volunteers and academics delivering the schemes needed to make active travel part a key part of everyday lives.
Self-assessment of active travel capabilities: tools and user guides
Improving the monitoring, evaluation and impact of progress against objectives
Best practice consultation and engagement
Ensuring greater integration of active travel infrastructure with the public transport network
Introducing greater certainty about the funding available for active travel
Understanding and applying common design standards
UK government authorities have committed to boosting active travel. In England, that means ensuring that 50% of trips in towns and cities are walked, wheeled or cycled by 2030. Scotland says that by 2030 its communities will be shaped around people and place, enabling walking and cycling to be the most popular mode of travel for short, everyday journeys. Wales wishes to increase its active travel trip mode share to at least 35% by 2040.
To meet these ambitious targets, local authorities are working alongside consultants, charities, campaign groups, volunteers and academia to ensure that people have the high-quality infrastructure needed to make active travel part of their everyday lives.
?Governments have estimated that every pound invested in active travel reaps around £4.30 in benefits, in health, in air quality and in decarbonisation. This represents significant value for taxpayers’ and needs to be more widely understood and communicated.
