Commute Zero: What still needs to be done?
This free webinar will highlight how local authorities need to translate Government’s national decarbonisation targets into local action now…
National estimates suggest that commuting accounts for about a quarter of the UK’s transport emissions.
The latest Department for Transport stats from the National Travel Survey (30 August 2023) show that:
Outside London, residents in England relied on cars for commuting, with 69% of commuting trips made by car by residents from urban areas excluding London, and this increases to 84% by residents in rural areas.
Commuting was the second most common trip purpose, with 119 trips per person. Commuting also accounted for the longest distance travelled with 1,008 miles per person.
Failure to take measures to displace commuting journeys by car seriously undermines any possibility of achieving the net zero emissions set by Government nationally – and, with the introduction of new Local Transport Plan standards next year – local carbon budgets and net zero commitments.
