Avoiding a car-based recovery: data and the evidence base

Over-dependency on car use harms the environment, makes our roads and streets less safe and impacts poorly on health and wellbeing. A net-zero future demands a reduction in vehicle miles travelled, not just for ICE cars but even for an electric fleet.

To reduce motor traffic, we need to make non-essential driving less attractive – and the alternatives better. In addition, trip lengths need to reduce, with the dual impact of reducing car miles and increasing the attractiveness of active modes.
Avoiding the damage of a car-based COVID recovery will require a commitment to introducing policies and projects that will encounter opposition. The ability to make a clear and transparent case to policymakers and the public is essential –  an evidence base must be urgently developed to demonstrate both the need for, and the feasibility of, such interventions.

What is possible
The rapid disruption of travel patterns during the covid-19 pandemic has shown us what is possible when non-essential vehicle journeys are minimised. Now, as public health restrictions are lifted, this webinar will explore how evidence-based decision making can support the structural transition to healthier and more environmentally sustainable travel patterns:
  • How efficient buses can be when traffic flows are managed effectively
  • Scenario testing for shared mobility, active modes and MaaS
  • Evidence based transport decarbonisation pathways
  • Accessibility planning: rapid analysis of accessibility by different transport modes
  • Data platforms, dashboards and reporting: supporting smarter economical and environmental decisions
  • Accessing and sharing reliable datasets
