The session will showcase the tools and services that local authorities, consultants and communities can use to create viable 20 minute neighbourhoods.
The idea of the '20-minute neighbourhood' is enjoying a resurgence. Although far from new: back in the early 1960s, US urbanist Jane Jacobs demonstrated how compact urban blocks promote activity, a strong sense of place, boost local economies and provide (almost) everything you need for life within walking distance. And now, post COVID, the idea is re-gaining popularity.
Compact and connected neighbourhoods, where people can meet most everyday needs within a short walk or cycle – and access clean, safe transport links to everything else – offer multiple benefits including improving health and wellbeing, increasing community cohesion, and helping to tackle climate change.
The key to creating a 20-minute neighbourhood is to understand how it works: what amenities there are, what is missing, how transport links work and how safe and connected the street network is.
