In its annual report to Parliament, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) called on ministers to seize the opportunity’ from COVID to tackle accelerating climate change by ‘building back better’ in a way that supports a green recovery. ‘Public money should not support industries or infrastructure in a way that is not consistent with the future net-zero economy,’ said the CCC.

There is a growing awareness that transport infrastructure is a shaper of places. Urban streets represent the bulk of urban public space, and transport schemes can have a major regeneration – or a blighting - impact on surrounding areas. Yet the various place impacts of transport schemes remain poorly captured, compared to the appraisal of movement-related benefits and dis-benefits.

Back in 2018, the Department for Transport reviewed its transport appraisal framework in the context of changing political and social expectations and values, recognising that transport should deliver social, economic, environmental and cultural benefits as well as being a means of moving vehicles, good and people.

Said Amanda Rowlatt, DfT Chief Analyst: ‘Our appraisal framework aims to provide as full a view as possible about the wide range of impacts transport has on the economy, environment and society.’

This webinar will explore the potential for evidenced-based appraisal tools and frameworks that consider multi-modal transport impacts on quality of place, the environment, liveability and wellbeing.
