The Future Streets conference is being organised by Local Transport Today magazine/Landor LINKS in partnership with Arup, Urban Transport Group, GRID, PTV Jacobs and University College London. This event will allow attendees to explore the way in which the different elements of urban mobility and street use can come together to advantage both as part of new thinking on smart urban policies, and to help local authorities with the new management challenge of emerging technologies and beahvioural change to street use by transport modes, and individuals, and real retail and commercial activities.

City life is changing, and so should our thinking about the best use of space for urban mobility needs. This re-evaluation should not be limited to just the road itself, but more specifically to the kerb and the significant and scarce resource that it represents. It can surely be put to much better use than just a home for stationary vehicles.

This pioneering event will explore planning for multifunctional city streets and the better use and management of kerbsides, road space and pavements to meet changing mobility and activity needs and balance economic, environmental and social priorities. It will provide a discussion of the opportunities, competing claims to, and public policy on, street space; economic, commercial and regulatory challenges; and appropriate models for space allocation by regulatory, design and pricing principles and deploying emerging new technologies.

Amongst the questions we will tackle:

1) How can road and kerb space be better managed and designed?

2) Do we fully understand the changing patterns of street, kerb and pavement use?

3) What should be the guiding principles for street visioning and design?

4) Will streets in the future play a new and different role in the urban realm?
