The DfT is currently preparing an Urban Mobility Strategy. This follows from a call for evidence into the Future of Mobility, one of the Grand Challenges highlighted in the UK’s Industrial Strategy. As part of that preparation it has commissioned work to understand how ‘the street of the future’ could look as a result of technological change.

This White Paper is a contribution to the debate that will surely take place once the Urban Mobility Strategy begins to take shape.

It takes as a given that high-quality, high-frequency bus services along major urban corridors need to take centre stage in any national Urban Mobility Strategy.

It supports the concept of a National Bus Strategy, as promoted by several different organisations in the bus industry, but also argues that there are key lessons to be learnt from the experience of the past as such national strategies are formulated.
