The government has announced that £400m will be spent on improving passenger and freight rail services across the North, Midlands and the South.
There will be an investment of £317m into the Transpennine route upgrade, which the DfT said will improve punctuality, reliability and connectivity for passengers between York, Leeds and Manchester.
