The DfT has announced the end to rail franchising in England, 25 years after the system was introduced.
Franchising had looked doomed before Covid-19 struck. The Government had already taken over East Coast (LNER) and Northern after the franchises ran into financial difficulty. Further franchises were expected to be terminated.
Announcing the end of franchising last week, transport secretary Grant Shapps said the pandemic had “proven that it is no longer working”.
