The DfT has released the first funding from its new £500m rail re-opening fund and invited bids to a new round of the New Stations Fund.
Northumberland County Council will receive £1.5m to help develop the proposal to reinstate passenger services over the freight-only line between Newcastle and Blyth/Ashington.
The DfT has also allocated £100,000 to a study of re-opening the disused railway between Fleetwood and Poulton-le-Fylde in Lancashire.
