Road transport fails to cover its external costs by a large margin, according to preliminary findings of European Commission-funded research.
Researchers are looking at the external costs of road, rail, air and water transport. The Commission said initial findings showed road transport accounted for about three-quarters of transport’s external costs, and was also “the mode which leaves the biggest amount of external cost unpaid”.
