The background to how the scenic Settle-Carlisle railway was saved from closure in the late 1980s is revealed in a new book.
British Rail issued a closure notice for the 72-mile line in 1983. The Government initially said it was minded to approve the closure but in 1989 minister of state for transport Michael Portillo announced the line’s reprieve.
