Sunderland City Council has halted the procurement of an iconic new road bridge across the River Wear after bidders’ priced the project far above the available £118m budget.
Councillors heard last week that none of the bidders had priced the crossing within the funding available. Officers said there was no prospect of finding additional funding to deliver the project because of the “significant additional funding required”.
