Latest figures from the Civil Aviation Authority show that rail operator Virgin Trains has now captured 77% of the rail/air sector compared with 75% one year ago.
Similarly on the London to Glasgow route despite slower schedules than air, Virgin Trains has seen its market share move from 9% to 11%.
Virgin Trains' Manchester to London rail route continues to flourish with journeys increasing by 12.6% over the last six months despite the recession.
