Some 1,901 people were killed in road accidents in 2011, a 3% rise over the previous year.
The statistics from the Department for Transport also reveal that 23,122 people were seriously injured in road accidents, an increase of 2% on the 2010 figures. Fatalities for car occupants rose by 6% and for pedestrians by 12 %.
