Longer jail terms for dangerous drivers

The government is seeking to toughen the penalties for dangerous driving, which would see convicted drivers receiving longer jail terms under a proposal to go before Parliament.

A new crime of causing serious injury by dangerous driving would carry a maximum sentence of five years. Many people jailed for dangerous driving receive sentences of less than two years, while those who kill through their mistakes behind the wheel can face up to 14 years.
