A Private Member’s Bill seeks to strengthen the regulations covering the scrap metal industry.
Labour MP Graham Jones brought the Metal Thefts Prevention Private Member’s Bill before Parliament, where it received its first reading on 15 November.
The Bill would give police and magistrates greater powers to close scrapyards that operate outside the law, as well as move towards a cashless system that would require proof of identity and address.
