Utility companies have been charged £31m in fines for overstaying their allotted time for roadworks over the last three years, according to figures obtained under a Freedom of Information request from the BBC.
The figures show that 33,460 sets of roadworks over-ran in 143 English council areas. Top of the fines list was the National Grid with £7.1m, while Essex County Council amassed the highest number of over-running roadworks with 3,165.
