Variable speed limits (VSLs) are being introduced on a congested stretch of the M4 near Newport in South Wales.
The system uses variable speed limits to smooth the flow of traffic over a 13km stretch of the motorway from junction 24 to junction 28. Initially, the VSLs will operate west of the Bynglas tunnels. The £7m scheme uses sensors to calculate the optimum speed for traffic across all carriageways. This speed is displayed on electronic signage on posts above the roadway.
