Newly updated guidance for signing arrangements for motorway service areas (MSAs) and other roadside facilities on major roads in England has been published by National Highways.
The guide includes details on sign design, erection, maintenance and funding on the strategic road network (major roads and trunk roads) in England.
Highways England suggests that the guidance should always be read in conjunction with the current Traffic Sign Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD) and Traffic Signs Manual (TSM) which provide detailed guidance on the design and use of traffic signs.
The guidance includes a section on advance signage for electric vehicle (EV) charging hubs.
EV hubs are intended to support the transition to zero-emission transport by offering rapid charging services without the provision of petrol or diesel fuels. The signage guidance states the primary purpose of the EV hub should be for recharging and the facility must not be a destination in its own right.
All facilities should be self-contained, in close proximity to EV charging bays, with safe pedestrian access for all customers and no need to re-enter public roads.
Facilities should operate under a shared identity, with consistent management and signage compliant with the TSRGD current at the time of planning approval.
