Self-driving vehicle pilots are set to start in England from spring 2026, the Department for Transport has announced.

Transport secretary Heidi Alexander has confirmed that the government will fast-track commercial pilots of autonomous vehicles on England’s roads to Spring 2026.

Firms will be able to pilot small scale ‘taxi-like and bus-like’ services without a safety driver for the first time. The vehicles could be made available to members of the public to book via an app.
