Thousands of lorries are being parked in laybys, on industrial estates and on the verge each night because their drivers cannot find adequate purpose-built facilities.

Despite a government drive to tackle the shortage of drivers in the road logistics industry thousands of truckers are still being forced to use makeshift parking places.

Ministers had pledged in July last year that it would drive efforts to “improve the quantity and quality of overnight facilities”.
