The Covid-19 crisis threw a spotlight on the essential role of transport and logistics as never before. Many of the leading lights and key workers in the response to the pandemic have been women, whose achievements will be recognised at an awards ceremony this week.

The 2021 Amazon everywoman in Transport & Logistics Awards take place as a virtual event on 8 July.

The finalists comprise 66 individuals representing all sectors of the industry, from freight and retail to automotive, maritime and air transport, this year’s finalists showcase the crucial positions women hold in transport and logistics, demonstrating progression, accomplishments and increasing avenues of opportunity.

The awards are organised by everywoman, an organisation for the advancement of women in business. Maxine Benson MBE, co-founder of everywoman, said: “Whether it is mentoring their peers or exploring solutions to prevent women leaving their careers after having children, the finalists were united in their dedication to paying it forwards and helping other women find fulfilling, long term careers in the industry, crucial to ensuring a strong pipeline of future talent.”

The awards will recognise two winners per category – one successful industry ‘Leader’ and one individual at any stage in their career who is going ‘Above and Beyond’ for their business.

There are also awards for International Inspiration, for a stand-out 'Apprentice', an 'Industry Champion', a 'Male Agent of Change' and, new for 2021, a 'Tech Innovator'.

Maxine Benson said: “The events of the past year provided the transport and logistics industry with myriad challenges, from skyrocketing demands for home deliveries and keeping staff safe, to coping with plummeting passenger numbers. It is an industry that has risen to the challenge thanks in no small part to the incredible talent of its female workers. In our finalists we see the passion, dedication, skills and leadership that has kept transport and logistics dynamic and resilient, and that kept the country moving in the most unprecedented of times.

“The transport and logistics workforce is one of the largest and, as the pandemic has shown, one of the most vital in the UK, with over 1 million employees. Whilst more women have taken up senior roles since the awards launched 14 years ago, they still only account for 20% of workers, showing that there is still more work to be done to attract women to careers in the industry.”

Jonatan Gal, UK operations director of award sponsor Amazon, said: “The everywoman in Transport and Logistics Awards and to recognise, highlight and celebrate the exceptional women who over the last year, have worked tirelessly to keep Britain moving at a time when customers have needed this industry more than ever.”
