Sunderland City Council is to trial a battery electric refuse vehicle for 12 months. The council says conventional diesel-powered 26-tonne refuse trucks have fuel consumption of three to five miles a gallon. The pilot will evaluate the costs of operation and maintenance, to establish if the additional purchase cost is paid back over its typical operating life.
