Welcome to the Northern Parking Powerhouse

The North East Parking Show takes place in Newcastle on 18 February

13 February 2020

The North East Parking Show will explore innovative approaches to parking management through a mixture of expert presentations, workshops and technology showcases.

Over 200 parking professionals from across the public and private sector are expected to arrive at Newcastle Civic Hall on Tuesday 18 February.

The North East Parking Show is a brand new event that has been designed to showcase the best in local authority parking and traffic management. It will be hosted by Newcastle City Council and organised by leading knowledge network Landor LINKS.

The day has been programmed by the Newcastle Parking Services team working with the Parking Review magazine.

The conference

The show, which will take place in the Banqueting Suite at Newcastle Civic Centre, will enable delegates to hear about new developments and approaches to managing parking, and also get hands-on access to new technologies and systems.

The day starts with an introduction to parking in Newcastle, with speakers including Cllr Nick Kemp, Cabinet member for Environment and Enforcement, Newcastle City Council, taking a look at the positive contribution that parking management and enforcement is making to the quality of life for citizens, businesses and visitors in Newcastle and the North East.

Christine Herriot, Director of Operations and Regulatory Services, Newcastle City Council, will then discuss the city’s approach to parking, events, schools streets, clean air, electric vehicles and community engagement.

“As a city council we aim to lead Newcastle towards a modern and vibrant future with high quality homes and jobs for all, while creating a destination for visitors from across the world,” says Cllr Kemp. “We have to keep the city running by maintaining a vast array of services; our fantastic staff do incredible things on a daily basis. We achieve this while meeting our own environmental targets of Newcastle becoming net-zero by 2030 and tackling the climate emergency we declared in April 2019. “

A session on future trends in parking will see Clive Parsons, Principal Consultant, Urban Foresight, explain how the Newcastle-based smart-city consultancy is helping local authorities and technology companies develop new approaches to mobility, parking and electric vehicle infrastructure.

Gareth Buchanan-Robinson, Commercial Director, RingGo, will then show on how smartphones are transforming the management and user of parking.

Futuristic technology will be the focus on the Parking Innovations Showcase, an engaging and interactive session that will bring together delegates and exhibitors. Showcase compere Nick Ruxton-Boyle, Technical Director, Project Centre, will introduce four presentations:

  • 'Business intelligence' - Chris Head, Senior Account Manager, RingGo
  • 'Digital Innovation for Smarter Towns & Cities' - Adam Sharp, Digital Solutions Sales Manager, Flowbird Urban Technologies
  • ‘Launching Chatbot Max' - Jason Barbour, Managing Director, Barbour Logic
  • 'Cashless parking for cleaner air' - Sinead Cahillane, Marketing Executive, PayByPhone

The afternoon session will focus on improving the parking experience.

Louise Hutchinson, Director of PATROL (Parking and Traffic Regulation Outside London) will provides advice and guidance for local authorities across England and Wales and ensures motorists have access to an independent appeals service, the Traffic Penalty Tribunal (TPT).

Rob Shoebridge, Team Manager, Civil Enforcement and Parking Services, Derby City Council will then discuss using attended ANPR systems to reduce dangerous and anti-social parking at school gates.

Delegates will then have an opportunity to take place in workshops that will enable them to discuss themes such as: cashless parking; setting parking tariffs; debt recovery; training and skills development; the Blue Badge scheme; and effective parking enforcement.
