I am not surprised that Transport for the North’s ambitious proposal for just one public transport smartcard covering the whole of the north of England is running into difficulties (‘Bus operators unconvinced by TfN’s smart ticketing proposal’ LTT 02 Aug). The north of England taken as a whole is a very large area not in any way comparable to compact densely populated London with its excellent public transport controlled by Transport for London.
