Cooperative driverless cars could make road safer

Autonomous vehicles sharing data can improve traffic flow by 35%, a Cambridge University study using model cars has found.

University researchers programmed 16 model cars to drive on a two-lane track to see what happened when one of them stopped. Initially traffic queues formed, but once the cars’ communication system was turned on, the vehicles slowed down to allow each other to pass the stationary car.
