IPC to support young suicide charity

05 May 2019

The International Parking Community (IPC) has named PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide as its sponsored charity for the 2019 annual conference and dinner. The IPC event takes place in Milton Keynes on 10 October.

Suicide is the main cause of death of all young people under the age of 35. The latest annual statistics reveal that in the UK over 1,600 young people between the ages of 10 and 35 died as a result of suicide, including 200 schoolchildren and 85 graduates.

PAPYRUS believes that many suicides are preventable and provides practical advice and support to young people and others concerned that a young person may be at risk of taking their own life.

“We rely heavily on our fundraising partners to extend our reach to vulnerable young people and those worried about them,” said Ged Flynn, chief executive of PAPYRUS. “It is great that the IPC, an organisation that the public would not normally associate with young peoples’ mental health, is being so proactive in its support of our work with young people.

“We applaud the highly responsible attitude demonstrated by the IPC’s management. We know only too well that large car parks, in particular, are places where vulnerable young people choose to go when they are struggling between life and death.

“Intervention is vital to save these lives. Equally important is the wellbeing and resilience of car park staff who may unwittingly find themselves in a position to try and prevent a possible suicide attempt.”

The IPC’s chief executive, Will Hurley, said: “PAPYRUS will be conducting an awareness session at our 2019 Annual Conference in October and we encourage all of our members and conference delegates to support this initiative.”
