Ford launches car and van scrappage scheme

Ford has launched a car and van scrappage scheme that enables UK motorists to make savings of up to £7,000 on some new models.

Unlike scrappage schemes launched by BMW and Mercedes, which are only for diesels, the Ford scheme will accept petrol cars. Under Ford's scheme old cars from any manufacturer can be exchanged for a new car until the end of December.

Andy Barratt, chairman and managing director of Ford of Britain, said: “Ford shares society’s concerns over air quality. Removing generations of the most polluting vehicles will have the most immediate positive effect on air quality, and this Ford scrappage scheme aims to do just that.

“We don’t believe incentivising sales of new cars goes far enough and we will ensure that all trade-in vehicles are scrapped. Acting together we can take hundreds of thousands of the dirtiest cars off our roads and out of our cities.”

Ford’s scheme is applicable to any pre-Euro 5 vehicle registered by 31 December 2009. Data from the SMMT shows that there are approximately 19.3m pre-Euro 5 emission level passenger cars on the UK roads.

The scheme will enable eligible consumers to benefit from a scrappage incentive of between £2,000 and £7,000 on a variety of Ford models, including the Fiesta and Transit Custom.

Ford’s Barratt said: “All new Ford EcoBoost petrol and EcoBlue diesel models meet the Euro 6 standard, the toughest vehicle emissions yet. Not only are they cleaner than ever before, but they are also the most efficient, meaning improvements in fuel economy too.”

Clean air campaigners said it was a step in the right direction but that the government had to do more.

The government’s clean air strategy, published in July, did not include a vehicle scrappage scheme, although it proposed a consultation on a scheme later in the year. Instead, the government announced that new diesel and petrol-powered cars would be banned from UK roads by 2040.

The clean air strategy was published was after the government lost a court case brought by environmental law campaigners ClientEarth over breaches in EU emissions standards.

ClientEarth lawyer Anna Heslop welcomed Ford’s scheme, but said it could not make up for lack of action by the government. “It seems the motor industry is finally waking up to the damage dirty diesels are doing to our lungs as well as their own reputation. What we need is a thought-through, coherent strategy from government to help people to move to cleaner and more sustainable technology.”

She added: “At the moment, there are pockets of small, short-term actions here and there, but nothing like the joined-up thinking we need to solve this problem.”

Vauxhall, now part of the Peugeot group, is running scrappage scheme that has been used by 20,000 customers since it returned in May this year, after running in 2015 and 2016. Vehicles must be traded in and scrapped in order to be eligible for a £2,000 allowance on a new Vauxhall model.

Vauxhall accepts cars made by other brands, which account for 63% of the vehicles that have been sent to Autogreen, Vauxhall’s recycling partner.

“While rivals are now trying to catch up with our scrappage scheme, Vauxhall has already surpassed the 20,000 vehicle milestone, with over 5,000 of those in 2017,” said Leon Caruso, Vauxhall’s retail sales director. “Scrappage has been a tremendous success for us and our customers. Not only can buyers potentially swap their older, often higher polluting car for a cleaner, more efficient brand new Vauxhall, but they can also use scrappage in conjunction with some of Vauxhall’s other great finance offers.”

Ford, BMW, Vauxhall and Mercedes sell around one million cars in the UK. The introduction of scrappage schemes could also have the effect of supporting car sales at a time when demand for new cars is beginning to show signs of a sustained drop for the first time in six years.

In July, new car registrations fell for the fourth consecutive month in a row, hit by a number of factors including uncertainty over Brexit, and lack of clarity over future government plans around new levies on diesel models.
