The Adam Smith Institute takes its name from the 18th Century philosopher and economist whose book, The Wealth of Nations, set out the argument for free markets. Mr Smith would no doubt have approved of the think tank’s new report calling for Network Rail to be sold but, as a Scot, he may have had a wee chuckle upon reading that Scotland’s train operator is called FirstScot Rail.
