20mph campaigners are misguided, but they’ll still win

Ian Gillies, York’s cabinet member for transport and planning, is quite wrong to say that “if residents of Acacia Avenue say a 20mph limit made a big difference who am I to argue?” (ibid).  

Firstly, if asked, finger-wagging supporters of 20mph limits will come forth in droves even if there have been no accidents in 20 years. Secondly, if 20mph is sensible most drivers will already be driving close to that.  Thirdly, if there is a speeding problem then speed humps...
