Motor transport’s benefits dwarf their external costs

So the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) thinks that drivers should be taxed much more heavily to fully cover the externalities of car travel, which they estimate to be £43-56bn per year (‘Motoring taxes need to triple to cover externalities, says IPPR’ LTT 31 Aug). What they fail to mention entirely is the other side of the balance sheet – the benefits of motorised road transport.
