Sharp drop in road tax evaders

Number of tax dodgers down by 40%

Road tax evasion has dropped more than 40% over the last year, according to the Department for Transport. Its annual survey reveals that the number of unlicensed vehicles has fallen from about 589,000 in 2007 to about 330,000 last year — a drop from 1.7% to 1% of all vehicles.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) says it collected 99.1% of all potential revenue from road tax in 2008. It estimates that road tax evasion could cost around £49m in lost revenue in 2008/09, down...
