Fuel theft up 500% in capital

Fuel theft from vehicles has surged by 500% in London since the start of 2008, according to the RAC.

Soaring prices at the pumps are thought to be a primary cause behind the growing trend, the motoring organisation said. Almost every region in England has seen a rise in fuel theft of more than 50% since January.

Police forces say they cannot give accurate figures on such theft, as they are recorded in the same way as all thefts.
