Cycle helmets 'raise accident risk'

Cyclists who wear a helmet are more at risk of being struck by an overtaking motorist than those who do not wear head protection, according to a researcher from the University of Bath. Traffic psychologist Ian Walker used a bicycle fitted with a computer and an ultrasonic distance sensor to record data from overtaking motorists in Salisbury and Bristol. He wore a helmet for half the time of the experiment and no protection for the other half. Walker found that drivers passed an average of 8.5...
