The benefit of autonomous vehicles to the UK economy could reach over $5.4 billiion (£4.5 billion) and support 52,000 high-tech jobs by 2050, suggests a study commissioned by business lobby group Chamber of Progress.

The study of impacts of automated ridehailing services in the United Kingdom was carried out by the consultancies Steer and Fourth Economy. The report identifies broad economic and social benefits will be derived from autonomous vehicles.

In addition, the report found significant benefits of AV deployment in the UK, estimating the country could avoid 206 million kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions and save $24m (£20m) in social costs, including savings in medical costs, police costs, property damage, and insurance.

The Chamber of Progress is an American trade group that represents technology companies on issues such as antitrust law, content moderation and self-driving cars.

“London’s winning the race, but turning an early lead into international impact will require the right policy framework and a clear path to scale,” said Chamber of Progress EU policy manager Patrick Grady.

“Our research lays out the opportunity for the UK: a boost for manufacturing, innovative jobs in strategic sectors, and a head start toward a smart city.”

The report recommends the UK government continue regulatory progress in 2026, including meeting the timelines set out in the 2024 Automated Vehicle Act to provide clarity for the industry.

In June 2025, the UK government announced plans to support public deployment and commercial pilots of Automated Passenger Services (APS) in England and Wales as early as spring 2026. Operators would conduct pilots using automated vehicles, with the public able to book automated rides through an app, similar to established ridesharing services. A wider roll-out of AV services is expected by the end of 2027.
