Metro Mayors have a much higher profile than other local authority leaders and are best known for their transport policies, according to research by Louise Reardon, Professor of Governance and Public Policy at the University of Birmingham.
Speaking at the Local Transport Summit, she revealed how 74% of people were able to name their directly elected mayor while just 20% could identify their local authority leader, and just 43% knew who their local MP was.
