The price of parking in parts of York is justified in order to tackle congestion, a councillor has said.
The cost of using the city council’s Bishopthorpe Road car park have been increased from 80p an hour to £4.85.
A petition opposing the rise has attracted more than 5,600 signatures.
However, Cllr Kate Ravilious, executive member for transport, defended the increase as part of moves to reduce congestion by encouraging walking and cycling.
