New biodiversity rules come into force for roads

Legislation came into force last week that will require major housing, commercial and infrastructure developments - including roads and railways – to improve the biodiversity of sites.

The biodiversity net gain (BNG) rules mean developers will be legally required to achieve a 10% net gain in biodiversity or habitat. If a woodland is destroyed by a road, for example, another needs to be recreated. This can happen either on site or elsewhere.
