Never has there been so much uncertainty about the bus industry’s economic model and funding, with a deadline approaching early in the new year and, as yet, no clarity on what help will be available, says Roger French

Life is tough at the top, they say. This is surely never truer than for bus company managers now, wrestling with post pandemic pressures of keeping their services going against a blown apart business model and a really uncertain landscape of continuing government funding support.

Positive words about the importance of public transport in both levelling up and tackling climate change post COP26 are all very well. But if the numbers don’t stack up, how can that be delivered?
