Industrial action may thwart rail recovery

The rail industry’s attempt to  recover from Covid-19 could be disrupted by industrial action. 

The RMT trade union has raised the spectre of a national dispute, claiming that Network Rail is planning for “thousands of rail worker redundancies by this September and a wholesale dilution of safety standards”.

With rail patronage at a historic low because of the pandemic, public subsidy has ballooned to keep the rail network operating.
