The economic performance of big cities such as Birmingham may be being hampered by their reliance on buses and lack of good rail infrastructure. 

The CityMetric website, an arm of the left-leaning New Statesmen magazine, says many factors influence a city’s economic performance but in developed countries there is often a correlation with population size.
