Minister over-ruled officials’ advice to axe tram-train pilot

DfT officials recommended cancelling the South Yorkshire tram-train trial last year as costs ballooned, but they were overruled by rail minister Paul Maynard, a National Audit Office investigation has revealed. 

The trial of tram-train vehicles running on-street and over heavy rail lines between Sheffield and Rotherham was announced by the DfT in 2012. The DfTwanted to test operational issues and develop new industry standards.
