Dorset tries to expand rural bus coverage

Dorset County Council hopes that withdrawing a discretionary concessionary travel arrangement in the county will encourage school transport operators to open their services up to the general public.

Dorset currently supplements the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme by allowing passholders free travel on bus services before 9.30am if the route has no other service until after 10.30am. 

There are 31 such routes in the county and the policy costs the council between £16,000...
