‘No contests’ are a complex issue

The fact that councils do not contest appeals is not always a sign of a problem with regimes

Sarah Champion MP said she has been surprised to hear that 41% of Nottingham City  Council’s appeals were not being contested. “There seems to be a problem across local authorities with them not contesting appeals,” she said.

However, PATAS chief adjudicator Caroline Hamilton, observed that a decision not to contest an appeal may indicate an authority is reviewing new evidence that comes to light as an appeal progresses.
