Car and bus commuting decline as home-based working grows

The percentage of people who commute to work in England and Wales by car or van fell between 2001 and 2011, according to Census data published by the Office of National Statistics.

Comparing 2001 and 2011 data, the Office of National Statistics reports:

• a fall in the percentage of commuters travelling to work by car/van as a driver or passenger – from 61.5% to 59.2%

• an increase in the proportion of people working at or from home – from 9.2% to 10.7%
