Train, tram or metro: what's the difference now?

As light rail systems grown in popularity, they are taking on more of the characteristics of metro and heavy rail and going underground says Daniel Wright.

When does a light rail scheme become a metro? And when does a metro become a suburban or commuter rail system? As railway vehicle technologies and system specifi cations move forward, it is becoming increasingly hard to tell where the dividing line is, and as successful light rail schemes generate more patronage, they are morphing into something much more like metros where planners and promoters are willing to let systems develop organically.
